Hi.

Welcome to Bumblemom. As my name suggestions, I’m bumbling along as best I can as I navigate a new culture, kids, and style.

Mercer Bay Loop Walk

Mercer Bay Loop Walk

This weekend we decided to do a little local exploring since a) we can’t leave Auckland due to the covid border and b) it was an absolutely gorgeous Saturday, one of the best we’ve had this spring. The Auckland border is actually quite expansive and includes all our favourite west coast beaches and walks. After a little digging, we decided to try a new one, the Mercer Bay Loop Walk located about halfway between Piha and Karekare.

I thought we were being smart and choosing a less well known and popular site for our weekend outing. I was very, very wrong. The place was packed. Cars were lining the side of Log Race Road almost all the way to Piha Road. We entered on the south side of the loop (by the toilets) per the recommendations of others at the park after washing our shoes at the Kauri dieback station, and began an unshaded decent towards the bay. Every so often there would be a break in the plants around the path and we would be rewarded with an absolutely stunning view of the bay below. We also ran across an fabulous Te Kawerau a Maki Pou (Maori marker sculpture). After about twenty minutes we came to the main attraction: a series of overlooks that provided incredible views of the bay below. People were being very considerate and letting each family have a turn at the overlooks, but it was definitely crowded and I’m glad I brought masks.

While the views were stunning, as a parent it was a bit nerve wracking. There were many spots with no barrier between the path and a steep drop off that a young kid could easily fall down. Though this is billed as a family friendly walk, I wouldn’t feel comfortable taking small kids who tend to run off or who need a stroller.

After a short time we were all getting hot and tired with the lack of shade. We started the climb up and were very happy to finally hit some trees after ten minutes or so. Once we had some shade, everyone perked up. We found a little bench tucked away off the main path that provided the perfect lunch spot. Once everyone was revitalized, we only had about a ten minute walk back to the parking lot.

The Mercer Bay Loop has some of the most outstanding views I’ve seen on a tramp, but it isn’t as easy as many of the other walks we’ve been on. We made it, but my shins were sore the next day and there was certainly some whining from the kids. For older or more experienced kids, however, it is definitely worth a visit!

This little day trip felt like a big adventure because of the covid lockdown situation. I know there are a number of other tramps in the area that are supposed to be great. Which one should we try next?
