Hi.

Welcome to Bumblemom. As my name suggestions, I’m bumbling along as best I can as I navigate a new culture, kids, and style.

Grocery Haul #14

Grocery Haul #14

The colder months are upon us, and with it what feels like more limited grocery options. I noticed this every year, but for some reason I always forget that by the time I pull out my assorted black puffer coats, most of my favorite fruits and veggies aren’t available. Part of living in New Zealand is eating seasonally, and while I appreciate that, I still miss the ability to get most any produce any time of the year.

There are a few things that I’m not purchasing at the grocery store because we have a number of productive trees and herbs at our house - something that is much more common here than in the United States. Our lemon tree is going bonkers, we have a number of different varieties of orange trees that are just starting to have edible fruit, and our parsley, basil, and rosemary plants never seem to die. I regularly add those items to the pantry and our menu which is both fun for everyone and cost effective. The bulk of our items come from the local New World. My latest grocery haul includes:

  1. Turkish bread thick pizza bases, 2 count - $4.89

  2. NZ Snapper fillets, .540 kg @$40.99/kg - $22.15 (Fish prices are noticeably higher these days.)

  3. Cotton Q Tips, 150 count - 99¢ (on sale)

  4. Silverbeet, 400g - $3.99 (In the US this is Swiss Chard.)

  5. Bird n Barrow butterfly chicken, 1.3kg - $14.99

  6. Gala apples, .546kg @$3.99/kg - $2.18

  7. Gold Kiwifruit, .406kg @$3.99/kg - $1.62

  8. Mandarins, .176kg @$3.99/kg - 70¢

  9. BBQ Pork steam buns, 4 count - $7.99

  10. Anchor organic milk, 2L - $6.49 each (purchased 3)

  11. Round beans, 250g - $3.99

  12. 1/2 pumpkin - $1.99

  13. Red capsicum, 1 count - $3.99 (yes, nearly $4 for one single bell pepper!)

  14. Ploughman’s Bakery farmhouse wholemeal bread, 750g - $3.69

  15. French stick - $1.99

  16. Peanut butter pretzel bites, .225kg @$24.90/kg - $5.60 (For those of you in love with the Trader Joe’s peanut butter pretzels, this is your Kiwi substitute.)

  17. Oob organic ice cream, peppermint chip, 470mL - $6.99 (on sale)

  18. Mainland unsalted butter, 500g - $5.99

  19. Raspberries, 125g - $6.99 (It’s the last hoorah for berries, and I’m willing to pay for another week of them. But yes, this is a high price.)

  20. Mutti pizza sauce, 2 count - $4.19

  21. Continental beef stock pot, 112g - $3.99

  22. Continental chicken stock pot, 112g - $3.99

  23. Proper salted tortilla chips, 170g - $3.49 (on sale, but this price has gone down over the last couple of months)

  24. Otaika Valley free range eggs, 1 dzn - $7.49

  25. Quality Bakers English muffins, 6 pack - $2.99 (back down to its normal price after a bizarre increase for about three months)

  26. Tim Tams dark, 200g 2 for $6 - $6.00 (on sale)

My total was NZ$152.33, or about US$108.15.
