Hi.

Welcome to Bumblemom. As my name suggestions, I’m bumbling along as best I can as I navigate a new culture, kids, and style.

Grocery Haul #19

Grocery Haul #19

We are in full-on winter grocery mode. That means produce choices are limited and/or extremely expensive (here’s looking at you, $8 cucumber.) This year there are the usual winter price increases compounded by a not-insignificant increase in all food prices. According to the latest numbers I’ve seen, food costs are 6.8% higher this year than last. However, there are also a number of fruits that are growing in lots of backyards: citrus in particular, like lemons, oranges, mandarins, etc. There’s no need to buy any of those because they are so abundant, and people often put extras out in front of their houses for the taking.

  • Paseo 3 Ply, 8 rolls - $8.99. If you read my toilet post, you’ll know that this is fancy TP. Most toilet paper is less expensive, but only single or double ply.

  • Ploughman's Bakery bread, 750g - $3.89. Up from $3.69 since the last time I had bread in a Grocery Haul.

  • Romaine Lettuce - $3.99

  • Quality Muffins English Muffin, 6 pack- $3.99. This price has gone down and stabilized at $3.99 from its high of $4.89. However, it is still much higher than the $2.99 it was last year.

  • Pam’s Potato Medley, 1 kg - $4.99

  • Bluff Salmon, .544 kg @ $45.99/kg - $25.00. This has gone up quite a bit from the $36.99/kg it was going for last year.

  • Green & Black 70% Dark Chocolate, 90g - $3.49 (on sale)

  • Whittaker’s Fijian Ginger Chocolate, 100g - $3.99 (on sale)

  • Hamburger Buns, 6 pack - $3.49. Up from $3.19

  • Beerenberg Caesar Dressing, 300mL - $7.19

  • Pam’s Corn Flakes, 500g - $3.39 (on sale)

  • Fairtrade Organic Bananas, 850g - $3.99. Down from $4.49.

  • Grapefruit, .336kg @$5.99/kg - $2.01

  • Taylor Pears. .366 kg @$4.99/kg - $1.83. We discovered these brown pears this year, and OMG they are delicious. The best pears I’ve ever had!

  • Brown Onion, .126 kg @$2.49/kg - 31¢. Up from $2.19/kg

  • Traditional Free Range Eggs, 12 pk - $6.99

  • Truss Tomato, .176kg @$13.99/kg - $2.46. Down from $14.99/kg

  • Loose Garlic, .076kg @$34.99/kg - $2.66

  • Avocado, $2.29

  • Red Capsicum, 2 for $6.50 - $6.50 (on sale)

  • Proper Salted Tortilla Chips - $4.99

  • Slider Rolls, 10 pack - $4.49

  • Uncle Toby’s Rolled Oats - $3.99 (on sale, purchased 2)

  • Belladotti Mushroom Risotto, 250g - $5.89

  • Anchor Organic Milk, 2L - $6.69. The price has gone up from $6.49. I purchased 3.

  • Zenzo Veggie Burgers, Classic Grill, 4 pack - $7.99

  • Zenzo Veggie Burgers, Chilli Kick, 4 pack - $7.99

  • First Light Wagyu Beef Sausages, 420g - $12.99

  • Glow Lab Antibacterial Soap, 300mL - $3.89 (on sale, not pictured)

My total grocery bill was NZ$182.18, or about US$111 with today’s exchange rate. While the price increases aren’t universal, there is certainly a creep upwards, especially with common use items, like milk and bread. However, I don’t think that the price increases are out of whack with what is happening in the rest of the world.
